N.B. YEAR 6 PARENTS-2ND ISLE OF WIGHT PAYMENT DUE ON FRIDAY 10TH FEBRUARY

CURRICULUM MEETING FOR PARENTS-Wednesday 15th March at 6.00 p.m.

Miss Donaghy will be running a curriculum meeting so that you can find out how to help your child in their journey to fluency in reading and writing. She will provide lots of ideas about how you can help your child at home and information about the extra challenges of the new English curriculum. We do hope you can join us.

ONE PARENT GOVERNOR POSITION

We have one position for a parent governor on the governing body and invite interested parents to fill in a nomination form and submit it to the office by Friday 24th February. Being a governor is really rewarding and gives you the opportunity to make a very real difference to the education, welfare and experience that all children have at Monkfrith.

Parent election letters and nomination forms will be emailed out today and can also be downloaded on the governor download page of the school website. Our next governing body meeting is on the 22nd March and we look forward to our new parent governor being in place for this meeting.

For more details about the role of the governing body please see the governor pages on the website. The 2016 governing body annual statement will give you an insight into the issues governors have addressed over the past year. Please also feel free to approach some of our current parent governors or to email the Chair of Governors on monkfrithgovernors@hotmail.co.uk to find out more about the role.

CHANGES TO PARENT CONSULTATION TIMES

Please note the extra morning slots added to the Monday consultation times and the earlier start on Wednesday.

Monday 27th February: 8.00am to 8.40am

                                               4.00pm – 6.00pm

Wed 1st March:              5.30pm – 8.00pm

Sign up sheets will be available at the main gate on Monkfrith Way on Tuesday 21st February from 8.30am.  After that they will be held in the office and you may text, phone and leave a message or email your requested time.

SWIMMING IN YEAR 4

Please note that swimming is an important part of the Physical Education curriculum and that children should only miss these sessions on very rare occasions. If a child is well enough to be in school then they are well enough to swim. Unless the hospital has advised against swimming or you have a note from a doctor, all children are expected to take part in swimming lessons.

A MESSAGE FROM PCSO BURDA
Dear All,

Below are the Ward crime stats for January.

We had sixteen burglaries last month, which is up considerably on the six we had in December. Five of the burglaries happened during the last three days of the month. In one of these burglaries, in Osidge Lane, an alarm linked directly to the police was triggered but the suspects still quickly burgled the house. Police arrived within ten minutes of the alarm going off but the suspects had already gone, they were seen by a member of the public climbing over fences into Shamrock Way and fleeing in a waiting blue Nissan Qashqai or similar vehicle.

There were nine motor vehicle offences last month, which was again up on December's figures. One of these offences was the theft of a handbag from a vehicle parked in New Southgate Cemetery. Several years ago we had a spate of handbag thefts from the Cemetery so please try to remember to lock your vehicle and remove valuables from it regardless of where you are parked.

Regards,

Justin

BRICKS AND BREEZE BLOCKS NEEDED FOR RECEPTION CLASSES

The bricks and breeze blocks in our Reception outside area have been so well used that we have almost worn them away! We need more house bricks (any type) and breeze blocks (cut in half, if possible) for little hands to be creative with. Please let us know if you can provide either. Thank you hopefully!

BIKE TRAINING FOR YEAR 3 AND 4

We have been offered more Level 1 Bike Training! The training is open to children in Year 3 and any children in Year 4 who did not take part last year.

The outcomes of the training are:
• To encourage and develop basic cycle control skills.

• To give trainees the confidence to use their cycles more often.

If you would be interested in your child receiving this free training, then please let the Office know by Monday 20th February - we can have a maximum of 24 children taking part and places will be offered on a first come/first served basis.  Children will need a bike  (without stabilisers) and a helmet to take part.

Dates and times will be confirmed nearer the time.

Free Cycle Training for Adults and Families

If you live, work or study in the London Borough of Barnet you can receive free adult one to one cycle training or free family cycle training for up to 3 people, one of which must be an adult.  If you would like to arrange your free cycle training, then visit www.cycleconfident.com.

PARKING PROBLEMS IN BROOKSIDE SOUTH

Thank you to all the parents who have tried to improve the parking problems in Brookside South by parking considerately. There are still a few parents who are still parking too close to dropped kerbs meaning our neighbours cannot turn into or out of their drives. Please park carefully or even better, further away!

Parking Sin Bin

Ford B Max LM64 UHK parked across one of the drives and left the car sticking out while they ran to collect a child from KS1.

BE SAFE, BE SEEN

Make sure your child is seen easily in the dark mornings and evenings.

We are selling fluorescent armbands (to go on coat sleeves) for Reception and Key Stage 1 children (£2 each) and fluorescent reflectors to attach to bags or zippers for Key Stage 2 classes (£1.50).

If you would like to purchase an armband (KS1) or a reflector (KS2), please send the money into school with your child in a named envelope labelled ‘armband’ or ‘reflector’(please specify either football, dinosaur or owl).

We have a limited number for sale so ‘first come first served!’

HEADLICE REMINDER

We are currently seeing a few cases of head lice mostly in Year 1 at the moment. Please make sure that you let us know if your child has head lice so that we can warn other parents to check their child’s hair. After treating your child’s hair make sure you continue to check every few days for any eggs that may still have hatched. A good way of keeping them at bay is to put plenty of conditioner on your child’s hair at bath time and comb through with a very fine tooth comb.

THE MONKFRITH SPRING RAFFLE EXTRAVAGANZA
Do you or a friend / family member have their own business? Can you help us fundraise for our children's playground?  FOMS are planning a big springtime raffle and we are looking for businesses who would be happy to donate a raffle prize.  This could be donations such as a gift card for a service (beautician etc ), a voucher for a restaurant, or an item or voucher from a shop.  If you are able to donate something to help the fundraising for the playground, please do contact us at F.O.M.S@outlook.com, speak to a committee member, or put a note in your child's book bag for the attention of FOMS.  We're looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks and best wishes for 2017,
The FOMS committee
