I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you for the incredible gifts I received yesterday. I was overwhelmed, thank you.
We had a great party last night and I want to say how brilliant Year 6 have been this year. It’s been a pleasure to have spent the year with such great children. You have grown in confidence over the year and are ready to move on to the next stage of your journey. Although I will miss you all, I wish you every success in your new school and know that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Best wishes for the future
Welcome to Year 6 with Mrs Ditchburn
An update from the Isle of Wight
The children (and the adults!) had a lovely day at Robin Hill yesterday.
Allarrived safely! The children have had dinner and are now having fun on the beach…
Welcome back to your last term at Monkfrith.
There is so much going on over the next three months, including SATs, our residential trip to the Isle of Wight, two very exciting topics and our end of term show!
SATs week is from 8th May to 11th May so between now and then you will have the chance to revise and go over things that you are not sure about as well as practise the types of questions you will encounter in the tests.
Our topic for this half term is Child of War. We will be finding out about how and why the Second World War began as well as debating whether fighting to protect your country is always the right thing to do. We will be learning about persuasive and discursive writing and writing our own flashback narratives.
Our class novel will be ‘Number the Stars’ by Lois Lowry
In the second half of the term, our topic will be Gallery Rebels. This is a fantastic opportunity to be creative and learn about alternative styles of art and different artistic movements. You will get a chance to paint, draw and sculpt!
I have not decided on our class novel for this half term, so keep checking back!
6LD will be headed to the Isle of Wight on the Sunday 21st May! Bring on the sunshine! It will be a brilliant week.
Children will have an opportunity for guided reading once a week and will be set some reading follow up homework or their next session. This book should be in school each day in case there is a change to the timetable.
Last term we focused on ensuring all children had accurate methods for calculations. This term we will be focusing more on applying these to problems solving. There will be regular times tables and arithmetic tests to give the children practice of the types of questions they will tested on and to help improve their accuracy. Their homework will be linked to an aspect of study from the week. Click here for the Year 6 Calculation Policy Leaflet
Other Curriculum Areas
The children will follow the RE Scheme of Work for Barnet. They will also have PE sessions on Thursdays so please ensure they have their PE kit in school.
In line with the school policy (see school website), in Year 6 the children are expected to spend 30 minutes-a-day reading independently plus 10 minutes mental maths/times tables. They will also receive some additional homework each week, which may relate to SATs revision. Please support your child to spend time completing work to the best of their ability.
Homework will be set every Friday and must be returned on Wednesday morning.
If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact or come to see me.
I’m really looking forward to a fantastic year! Mrs Ditchburn
